The History of the Vacuum Before the 20th century, cleaning floors meant vigorously beating rugs outdoors or using manual sweepers. In 1901, Hubert Cecil Booth invented one of the first powered vacuum cleaners in the UK. It was so massive it had to be pulled by horses and parked outside the house, with long hoses fed through the windows!
Fast forward to 1908, James Spangler and William Hoover created the first portable, upright vacuum cleaner for domestic use. For nearly a century, the basic design remained the same: a human pushing a loud machine across a carpet.
The Robot Vacuum Revolution The true leap into the future happened in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Swedish company Electrolux introduced the first robotic vacuum, the Trilobite, in 1996. It was groundbreaking but frequently bumped into walls and missed spots. In 2002, the Roomba popularized the concept in America, using basic algorithms to bounce around a room.
