The History: From Dream Journals to Brain Waves Until the 1920s, the only way to study sleep was through subjective dream journals. The scientific breakthrough occurred when scientists discovered how to record brain waves using an EEG (electroencephalogram). In the 1950s, researcher Nathaniel Kleitman and his student Eugene Aserinsky discovered REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, proving that the brain is incredibly active while we rest.
